Calligraphy Embellishment:
Calligraphy embellishment enhance calligraphic work, by increasing the visual elegance of the letters, and overall design.
Calligraphy flourish
Calligraphy flourishes are attached to individual, or groups of calligraphy letters. Flourishes range from small elegant extensions, to flambeaus loops, usually attached to tips of a letter serif.
To learn about good flourishes, you have to start by recognizing the basic flourish shapes. Have a search around the web for basic flourish shapes, or buy a book and keep it as a valuable guide to help you. That is what I have done. There are so many great calligraphy books out there bursting with inspiration.Practising with flourish capitals is the best way to begin, when learning how to do calligraphy flourishes. This is because you can practice with a single letter, by adding flourishes to a single initial in a document, and or title, to your calligraphy piece, this helps you focus on one letter at a time and not overwhelm yourself.
When you have found the flourish you would like to use, practice it over and over again until you get the hang of it and the motion becomes more natural flowing. Try to get the loops, lines and swirls parallel to develop good balance in your design. This means to try to get the flourishes in equal size if you were to cut in half.
By using a pencil and then going over it with a calligraphy pen, ink or paint, is good as this helps you to roughly draft out the flourish and get it perfect, thus avoiding mistakes. Bellow are some images of how I practiced flourished with a black marker fin line pen, and then with later incorporating two black fine liner pens taped together, creating a calligraphic style tip:

Calligraphy swash
Calligraphy swashes are mainly defined as simpler versions of calligraphy flourishes and are used in italic capitals. Though they are considered the similar version of flourishes, many calligraphers consider flourishes to be the same as calligraphy swashes.
