The calligraphy stroke produced depends upon many factors, one core factor is the nib used. The nib is a tool used to produce marks on a paper, like a pen or a pencil. The nib isn’t made with ink already built in it like the pen, but instead ink has to be loaded into the nib manually by the calligrapher. The storage of the ink in the nib is made possible by a reserver attached to the nib or a built in reserver. The nib needs a pen holder/nib holder also to make it able to hold and write.
The whole shape of your letterforms depends upon the carefully chosen nib. A wide, broad-edged pen nib produces thicker stroked letter forms, whereas a thin broad-edged nib produces thinner letter strokes. Examples of broad edged calligraphy techniques are roman minuscule, Blackletter other old English alphabets, and also Arabic alphabet.

As well as the nib size determining the size and thickness of the letter form produced, other pens, such as the oblique flexible nib pen, relay on the pen pressure applied by the calligraphers. Light pressure applied to the nib produces thin, hair-lined strokes, whereas more harder pressures applied produces thicker strokes. This technique uses flexible nibs and is used for copperplate styles such as the spencerian script.
